About 25 years ago in June 1992, a “revolution” was claimed
to have taken place in urban Sindh especially in Karachi from within MQM
against its own founder and leader Altaf Hussain. Ostensibly, the so-called “revolution”
was only against Altaf Husssain, but whoever stood with him was either killed by
the deployed militants or arrested by the law-enforcement agencies.
Considering
the scenario, Altaf Hussain had no other option, except to ask his followers to
go in hiding. As a result, all of MQM`s workers from top leadership to common
workers went underground in order to save their lives.
Like other party workers, MQM`s other leaders and elected
representatives too had gone underground, but MQM`s chairman Azeem Ahmed Tariq (the
second top leader after Altaf Hussain) was first trapped by the military
establishment in the name of providing protection to his party workers and,
later on, was murdered at his residence.
Not only this, but also MQM`s
political and ethnic rivals were officially given a license, by announcing head
money, to behead Dr. Imran Farooq, the person who was then party`s general
secretary as well as the third most important personality in the party. In short,
Altaf Hussain was left all alone to fight the battle of his people with the establishment
which was equipped with the entire state machinery.
Taking into account the on-going policy of the Pakistan army
headed by General Asif Nawaz Janjuaj and the resulted brutality in Karachi, almost
all the political analysts were of the same view that Altaf Hussain`s political
chapter had been closed for ever.
No doubt, there had been created so hostile atmosphere against
Altaf Hussain and his followers that even the MQM`s own workers and elected
representatives were not sure if their party would ever be able to regain its
previous position. Yes, their concerns were genuine as in the scenario where
the entire MQM`s work force had gone underground and the party offices had
either been occupied by the “Haqiqi” militants or been closed. All that had
definitely created a vacuum for its rivals backed by the state authorities.
Yet neither Altaf Hussain himself lost his heart, nor did he
let his followers do so. He left no stone un-turned to keep the moral of his
followers high enough to beat the malicious propaganda mainly aimed to shred
their unity. He was thousands of miles away from Pakistan, yet he continuously remained
in close touch with his people and kept on screwing up their courage to continue
their struggle so as to fail the evil conspiracy against the party.
Altaf
Hussain fought the people`s battle by himself politically despite having not
been “on ground” physically. Altaf Hussain had to work harder in order to give
a new life to his party as the MQM`s organizational structure had been
forcefully shattered.
Very soon his high spirit brought positive results and all
the analysis about the (militarily enforced) “downfall” of MQM and Altaf
Hussain completely got flushed out. The results of 1993`s general elections
proved that Altaf Hussain`s party was still alive and that he was not an ordinary
leader based on his followers, but is, in fact, a one-man army with
irrepressible courage against all the hostile forces.
Honestly speaking, had Altaf Hussain anyhow during the time
when MQM was in hot water, lost his heart (especially due to the disloyalty of
his own people), the party had long before got wiped out from the scene of
Pakistani politics and, consequently, no one would be able to enjoy the party
mandate like today. Altaf Hussain`s struggle made it clear that these were not his
followers who made Altaf Hussain a leader, but, in fact, it was Altaf Hussain
himself who made MQM and its ordinary people elected and so successful.
Unfortunately, today too, the 1992-like situation has been
enforced against Altaf Hussain and his brain child MQM. Once again, a new
“Haqiqi group” has been deployed against him with the same misconception about their
leadership. Like in the past, Pakistan has been made a hell for his loyalists. Whoever
tries to stand with him is either arrested or even killed. Again an extremely
difficult situation has been created for Altaf Hussain.
But, Altaf Hussain`s moral is not down at all despite the
disloyalty of his own people, the establishment-hatched conspiracies in London
and the difficulties his followers that are facing in Pakistan. He is
performing his duty as the father of his nation. He is struggling again to secure
the future of his people with new zeal and spirit. He is not in a mood to
surrender at all to the Pakistani establishment.
He is once again busy in boosting
the moral of his loyalists through press statements, speeches, audio and video
messages. His strong voice, powerful gesture and picture (especially with a
smile) fill his followers with a new life in them. They altogether forget that the
state machinery is being to crush them. They stand again like a robot to obey
his leader.
Considering the Altaf Hussain`s irrepressible courage, political
wisdom, charisma, and commitment to his greater cause, it is almost impossible
for his rival forces to defeat him. This time too, they will fail again just like always
in the past.
