Let`s Make Our Parliament “Special”!

The people of our country have been facing countless problems for decades. Whatever difficulties that the people of a poorly-run state can, our nation is confronting the same. Whether these problems relate to the economy, law & order, energy, system of justice, society or the foreign affairs, all of them are present in our country. Of all these, the economic issue has become so severe for the common people that it is getting extremely difficult to make a living for them.
The educated and experienced people too are facing hurdles in finding jobs. Like the educated people, the less or uneducated people also remain always physically prepared to work harder, yet they are jobless as well. The people complain that when they have got the required education and that they are ready to work harder, why are they still without jobs? When no means to earn money, how to buy the essential items for their families? How to survive then? Due to this situation, people are getting frustrated. They are feeling suffocated. Even, some of them have already committed suicides.
These are the common problems and their resulting sentiments of the people who are considered normal or physically fit for the society. But, what about the ones who are physically and/or mentally unfit? When even the normal people are not in a position even to survive in the society, how would the people, who are commonly known as “special people”, afford to facet them? What will they do? Who is going to take care of them? Whose responsibility are they? Who would take care of them; the government, Parliament, Civil society or directly God Himself?
The parliament is the forum where the issues of the nation are discussed and the relevant legislations are done. The people`s problems are somehow directly or indirectly highlighted through the parliamentarians. But, who will raise the voice of the disabled persons in the assemblies? Who would like to call the attention of the government and the parliament to their long and deteriorating problems so that the necessary legislation can be made? Should there not be some “Special” members in the Parliament who can plead the case of their own people in a better way?
This “wish” started coming true to hear this a very pleasant news that a bill was submitted to the National Assembly for reserving seats for the “special people” and that the standing committee also approved it to be tabled in the National Assembly for discussion. This Bill was prepared and submitted by MQM. Though MQM`s representation in the National Assembly is only up to 6 percent of the total members, yet it has done a very good job.
Now, the bill has been approved by the standing committee, it is the responsibility of all the political parties and their members to support it so that the deprived segment of the society can have an opportunity to take up its own issues in the parliament. By providing the opportunity to the “special people” of being the member of the parliament, there would develop a sense of participation in them.
Moreover, the Bill should not be opposed just on the basis of the political rivalry. All of the members should see the Bill beyond their political interests following the Hadice which says,
“Do not see who the speaker is, but focus on what is being stated by him”.
There has already been much lip service in this respect. Now, there has to be some concrete steps to make them have the feeling that the Parliamentarians do realize their pains. Although, the present government and the parliament are criticized for many reason, but the legislation for reserving seats for the “special persons” would certainly be one of those good moves for which the Parliamentarians would be appreciated.
At end, it will be unfair not to praise MQM and its leadership who initiated this very positive and important move. So, well done, MQM!
